A Kiambu village is still in shock five days after residents woke up to news that one of them had drowned alongside four children.

Ms Consolata Wanjiru, 29, is believed to have thrown the children — two of them her own and the rest her nieces — into the swollen River Kariminu in Gatundu last weekend. She thereafter jumped into the river and drowned.

Her body and two of the children have been retrieved. Police and villagers are searching for the others.

The children were identified as Michael Ndung’u, 7, and three-year-old Maryanne Wanjiku (Wanjiru’s) and nieces Anne Wanjiku and Susan Waithira aged seven and four years respectively. The nieces were sisters.
The children’s grandmother Lucy Wanjiku, said she left them with Wanjiru in the afternoon but when she returned just before 7pm nobody was at home.

She said after waiting for a long while, she called her son Ngugi Nyaga — Wanjiru’s husband — and together with neighbours mounted a search.

Mr Nyaga, who makes coffins at Mang’u shopping centre and owns a boda boda, said earlier in the day he received a disturbing text message from his wife telling him to prepare five coffins. But he opened the SMS five hours later when the wife and children had gone missing.

The father of the two sisters, Mr Samuel Gichohi (Wanjiru’s brother), said he had lost his wife three weeks ago and had decided to take the girls to his sister.

Losing two children at once under the circumstances was a big blow, said the father of six other children
