chamaA 27-year-old woman is being held by police in connection with the killing of a savings group colleague.

Police said Benta Onyango attacked her colleague who had visited her house on Wednesday with four other women to collect Sh1,500.

Witnesses said Ms Onyango attacked Mrs Felister Arega, 55, when the latter arrived to recover their loan. Upon failing to give them the money, they began taking her household items.

The five women are members of Community Savings and Loans Sacco. The killing took place at Boi Village in Rarieda Sub-County.

East Asembo Chief Erick Okal said a quarrel began soon after the visitors started taking the utensils.

He said Ms Onyango pushed Ms Arega and hit her head on a table. She died on the spot.

Rarieda officer commanding police division Johanna Chebii said that Onyango was being held at Aram Police Station to help with investigations. He did not say what she would be charged with.

Mr Chebii advised the public to involve the authorities in financial matters to avoid conflicts.

Elsewhere, a 30-year-old man killed his mother on Tuesday following a disagreement over food.

According to the man’s sister, he came home drunk and demanded food from his mother.

After being given food, he asked for more.

“I did not pay a lot of attention to his complaints, unaware that he would turn violent and kill her,” the man’s sister said.

She added that her brother cut their mother on the back of the head with a panga.

The woman said her brother, whom she suspects of using drugs, had on many occasions demanded a lot of food from their mother.

The suspected killer is in custody to help police with investigations. Kisumu County Police Commander Nelson Njiiri said the man would be arraigned for murder soon.
